Course Description

This advanced course provides students with the opportunity to engage deeply in psychological research, focusing on identifying a significant societal problem and developing a comprehensive intervention or solution plan. Over 8 weeks, students will independently conduct research using existing literature and secondary data, apply critical analysis, and create a plan that addresses the problem in a practical, real-world context. Additionally, students will explore avenues for publishing their work or implementing their solutions in professional settings, ensuring their research has a meaningful impact beyond the classroom.

What you will learn

  • Identifying a Societal Problem and Research Planning: By Week 2, identify a relevant societal issue (e.g., mental health challenges, educational inequality, substance abuse) and develop a research plan outlining objectives, key research questions, and a methodology that relies on secondary data analysis, literature review, and theoretical exploration.
  • Comprehensive Literature Review and Data Gathering: By Week 3, conduct an extensive literature review to gather existing knowledge and data on the chosen issue. Analyze and synthesize this information to identify gaps in the literature and potential areas for intervention.
  • Developing a Solution or Intervention Plan: By Week 5, use the findings from the literature review to develop a detailed intervention or solution plan. This plan should include evidence-based strategies, target populations, goals, and actionable steps for addressing the identified societal problem.
  • Drafting a Publishable Manuscript or Professional Report: By Week 6, draft a manuscript or professional report detailing the research findings and proposed intervention. The draft should be suitable for submission to a relevant academic journal, professional publication, or as a consulting report for organizations.
  • Exploring Publication and Real-World Application: By Week 7, research potential publication venues (such as academic journals, magazines, or online platforms) or practical applications (such as community programs, policy recommendations, or professional consulting opportunities). Develop a strategy for how the research will be shared or implemented in a real-world context.
  • Peer Review and Manuscript Refinement: By Week 7, engage in a peer review process to provide and receive constructive feedback. Revise the manuscript based on feedback to enhance clarity, coherence, and scholarly impact.
  • Final Presentation and Submission: By Week 8, present the research findings and intervention plan to the class, demonstrating the practical application of psychological research to solve real-world problems. Submit the final manuscript or professional report, showcasing advanced research and writing skills.
  • Ethical Considerations and Scholarly Communication: Throughout the course, apply ethical research practices, and learn to effectively communicate complex research findings in a clear and compelling manner.
